F.A.Q.'s About Band
Q: When do students sign up to be in the Middle School Band?
A: The band is the largest student group at BMS and we want every student to be a part of this class! If student want to be in the band, THEY MUST SIGN-UP at the END OF THEIR 5th GRADE YEAR when they register for middle school classes. This is the only year they can join if they wish to become a part of the band. We learn so much in our first year and due to our schedule, students are unable to join in 7th and 8th grade.
Q: Is there a cost associated with Middle School Band?
A: At BMS, we are very fortunate to have several folks who help us provide things for students, such as instruments, music, and even help pay for trips, however, it is preferred that students provide their own instrument if possible. We work with local music stores to help parents find rent-to-own options that are affordable and offer free repairs. Please know that finanical concerns should NEVER be a reason a child could not participate in band. WE WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN FOR YOU!
Q: In Middle School, can students take other electives AND band?
A: YES! Band is a year-long elective, however, as a middle schooler, you can still take TWO OTHER elective classes and still be a part of the band.
Q: As an eighth grader, what classes do I need to register for?
A: Freshmen must register for BOTH the Fall and Spring semesters of Band.
Q: In High School, can I take band and still take AP and Honors classes?
A: ABSOLUTELY!!! You can take band and still have room for honor classes. The fact is, the majority of the AP and Honors students at Brevard High School participate in band and other arts classes. By the way... Students in High School Band can receive an Honors Credit each semester!
Q: Does it cost anything to be in High School Band class?
A: Yes, there is a yearly fee of $25 per student. This fee is our "fair-share" that all band class students pay. It is used to purchase method books to use in class, to pay for instrument repairs, bring in clinicians to work with the band, and instrumental supplies. It is also suggested that students purchase new, upgraded reeds/mouthpieces/head-joints/mallets that they will need for more advanced playing.
Q: In High School, do I have to be in the Marching Band?
A: Beginning in the Fall of 2022, Marching Band will no longer be required for Band Students. Marching Band will be a voluntary after school activity, just like a sport and will only meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school.

A: Yes. You must be in a band class at BHS during the school year in order to participate in Marching Band.
Q: Can I be in Marching Band and participate in sports?
A: Yes. Most definitely! Staying fit and healthy is an important part of being a good musician. The band works with the fall sports coaches in making it possible for students to have equal time at after school sports practices and band rehearsals. We have had Cross Country members, Winter Track members, Volleyball players, Soccer players and even Football players in the Marching Band. As with all sports, there is a fee to join. It is $150 and can be paid in installments if needed. This fee covers expenses related to marching band (i.e. - uniform cleaning, marching instrument rental, show music, show design, drill writer fee, drumline and color guard instructor fees, and helps pay for food for the band.
